F1 Australia GP Winners and Losers: Who Shone and Struggled Down Under?
The Australian Grand Prix was a complete spectacle, with mind-boggling performances, heart-stopping crashes, and shocking results. Some drivers stole the show with incredible performances, while others had a disappointing weekend on Melbourne streets.
Who were the winners, and who had a weekend to remember? Let’s break it all down.
Winners: Those Who Succeeded at the Australia GP
1. Carlos Sainz – The Comeback King
Carlos Sainz was the subject of most conversation over the weekend. Weeks away from undergoing surgery to have his appendix removed, the Ferrari driver tore through the pack to claim a remarkable victory. Everyone questioned whether he’d be healthy enough to drive, but Sainz silenced his doubters with a commanding performance.
His measured tire management allowed him to control the race, demonstrating Ferrari possesses the speed to challenge Red Bull. Is this brewing into a title fight?
2. Ferrari – A Massive Statement
Not only did Sainz win, but his teammate Charles Leclerc also secured second place, giving Ferrari their first 1-2 finish since Bahrain 2022. This result showed that Ferrari’s pace is real and not just a one-off.
Ferrari fans have been longing for a return to dominance, and this result suggests they’re back in business. The question is: Can they keep this form going for the rest of the season?
3. McLaren – Home Heroics for Piastri
Oscar Piastri left no wheel out of place in his home Grand Prix, grabbing his best F1 finish with P4. The Australian driver had the full support of the home fans, and he delivered under duress.
His teammate Lando Norris also had a solid race, finishing P5. McLaren has seemed to have some consistency, and if they can continue that, they could start fighting for podiums regularly.
4. Red Bull’s Constructors’ Advantage
While Max Verstappen was forced to retire early because of a brake issue, Sergio Perez managed to score some crucial points for Red Bull with a P5 finish. While this race did not go their way, they are still firmly in control of the Constructors’ Championship.
It will take more than one bad race to ruin their title defense, but reliability is now a concern. Was it a one-off malfunction or something more serious?
5. Yuki Tsunoda – Finally in the Points
AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda had been knocking on the door of points all season, and in Australia, he finally broke through. Finishing in P10, Tsunoda drove a composed race, proving he belongs in the F1 midfield battle.
Consistency is key, and if Tsunoda can keep this performance level up, he might be in for a strong season.
Losers: Drivers Who Raced in Melbourne
1. Max Verstappen – An Unusual Retirement
Not too often that Max Verstappen experiences car troubles, yet in Australia, they struck when it mattered the least. No more than several laps into the race, there was a supposed brake failure which forced the current World Champion onto the grassy apron early and out of contention.
For a driver who had become accustomed to winning, this was a pill too bitter to swallow. Having said that, having known Verstappen, he will be back stronger next race.
2. Mercedes – A Weekend to Forget
Mercedes also had a horrible weekend with both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton underperforming. Hamilton’s race was short-lived due to a power unit failure, while Russell crashed in dramatic conditions.
The team has been putting in the effort to get their car ready, but in Australia, they seemed to take a step back. Can they turn it around for the next race?
3. Aston Martin – Missing the Spark
Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll had a quieter weekend than expected. While Alonso managed to gain P6, it was not the podium-pressing performance the team were hoping for.
Aston Martin gave us glimpses of brilliance during the last season, but seem to have fallen behind Ferrari and McLaren in terms of development. Are they able to catch up?
4. Logan Sargeant – Still Looking for That Breakthrough
It’s not an auspicious start to the season for Williams’ Logan Sargeant. In Australia, he once again ended outside of the points, and one wonders if he is going to be sticking around in F1 long-term.
With more seasoned drivers in the pack, Sargeant needs to pull out something special sooner or later in order to ensure he holds his spot. Can he turn things around in the upcoming races?
5. Haas – No Points Once More
Haas saw glimmers of pace during qualifying but, on Sunday, could not convert it to points. Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg struggled bravely but could not finish inside the top 10.
With midfield struggle so balanced, Haas need to start taking advantage of things in a hurry, or risk getting pinned at the back.
 What’s Next?
The Australian Grand Prix shook things up in F1. Ferrari showed they can beat Red Bull on merit, McLaren showed outright pace, and Mercedes struggled a bit more than expected.
Going forward as the season continues, the questions burning in everyone’s mind are:
– Can Ferrari make this streak continue?
– Will Red Bull get their reliability in order?
– Will Mercedes bounce back before it’s too late?
With the next grand prix looming on the horizon, the drama is far from over. Tune in for more in this season of Formula 1!
