Although cheerleading has been a focus of increased safety attention in the past years, it is still a dangerous sport. The rate of direct catastrophic injuries suffered by cheerleaders was higher than any other type of high school athlete between 1982 and 2017. Only football players have suffered more direct catastrophic events than college cheerleaders. Cheerleading is a sport-so treat it as such.
Team sports such as cheerleading have more athletic requirements than cheerleading. Many athletic associations, however, don’t recognize cheerleading as a sport, which results in fewer funds and resources. In spite of whether cheerleading is a sport or not, institutions should ensure student safety and prevent liability by providing equitable resources to cheerleading teams.
Cheerleading’s confusing status results from its misunderstanding abroad. Several types of cheerleading exist, including spirit squads and competitive cheers. Although there are similarities among them, they are different in their nature.
Cheerleading for school teams is known as spirit squad, which is more traditional. Spirit squad cheerleaders do not normally compete despite their strenuous displays. Their main purpose is to support others. The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) of the Department of Education clarify in a Dear Colleague letter from 2008 that Spirit Squads are not considere sports for Title IX regulations.
Gymnastics, cheerleading, and dance are all combined into competitive cheer, also known as STUNT or competitive spirit. At regional, state, and national competitions, the teams compete for prestigious awards. Over 100,000 students from high schools participated in competitive cheer throughout the 2018-19 school year. According to Title IX, competitive cheer could be classified as a sport. This is a decision made on a case-by-case basis by the OCR.
Cheer is being recognized increasingly as an interscholastic sport, especially in high schools. A national governing body was assigned to cheerleading by the International Olympic Committee in 2016. As part of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Participation Survey for the 2018-19 school year, 31 states recognized competitive spirit as a sport.
Colleges have been slower to recognize competitive spirit as a sport. Cheerleading is neither sanction nor overseen by the NCAA, and the organization does not plan to do so in the future. This will continue to be an obstacle to resources for college cheerleading.
A similar allocation of resources as in other sports will reduce injuries and liability. Ensure that your institution’s cheerleading program and safety guidelines are reviewed and follow:
