IPL 2025 Opener: RCB Trumps KKR in Style
The rather heralded season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 kicked off with a bang in the very first match, a riveting contest between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the historic grounds of Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
After such a thrilling match, the crowd cheered along a seven-wicket victory for RCSB, thus auguring well for an exhilarating tournament ahead.
This match-up had become even more eagerly awaited, especially since KKR were the defending champions, and RCB were hell-bent on making a statement loud enough to be heard worldwide at the beginning of this new season.
Scores of spectators must have been thrilled to be a part of this happy resurrection of the spectacle called T20 cricket. Expectations were sky-high, with both teams fielding various world-class players hell-bent on opening their campaign in style with a win.
PL 2025 Opener: Match Summary
KKR’s Innings: A Poor Start
Winning the toss, KKR chose to bat first on their home ground with the target of posting a big total. A steady 56 off 31 balls by Ajinkya Rahane sent intent to the forefront as he quickly built momentum in the innings.
Sunil Narine then pitched in with a more aggressive 44, whereas up until that point, the KKR innings were slowing right down against some smart bowling from RCB spearheaded by Josh Hazlewood and curtailing them to just 174 in 20 overs.
KKR looked all set to post a massive total. Despite early glimpses of promise, the slow death caused by RCB’s slow bowlers made getting to 180 all the more arduous.
With runs coming through crisply from the bat of Rahane and the natural attacking intent of Narine sustaining the ask on the first ten aboard, however, when the RCB bowlers got into that groove, the run flow came to a halt.
To limit KKR to a low score, Hazlewood’s 2/22 was extremely decisive, moving the ball off the seam sufficiently to expose any batsman that was slightly errant, though other bowlers were also able to penetrate the bottom order when losing wickets.
In essence, the situation got more and more tense when losing wickets, and KKR’s middle order could not deal with that pressure. With Russell and Iyer struggling, RCB made it tough for KKR to score in those crucial dying overs.
IPL 2025 Opener: RCB’s Dominant Chase
The RCB openers, Virat Kohli and Phil Salt were adamant from the very beginning, thoroughly blasting apart KKR’s bowling attack.
A steadfast 59 from Kohli and an even brisker 56 from Salt set up a solid platform for this run-chase. The 95-run opening partnership gave RCB almost a scenario in which they never looked troubled whatsoever.
Salt was doing some phenomenal batting during the Power play, playing shots mercilessly. His audacious display put the KKR bowlers under considerable pressure to re-evaluate their lengths and strategies.
Once again, Kohli became the glue that held the innings together, keeping the scoreboard ticking and punishing anything remotely loose with his exquisite stroke play.
With his 34 runs, Rajat Patidar further inflated the bank account of RCB as the team met the entire target in just 16.2 overs. KKR’s bowlers could not do much to rectify the situation, having failed to take crucial wickets at the most crucial stage.
Adding this extra spinner backfired, as dew made it hard for grips to the ball and made the deliveries so proportionately that batsmen easily found boundaries.
Major Performances
Virat Kohli, RCB 59* off 42 balls: chased it down with his usual class and composure.
Phil Salt RCB 56 off 28 – provided the early bang.
Josh Hazlewood RCB – 2/22 from 4 overs; this was one of the most crucial contributions to preventing KKR from getting above a particular rate.
Ajinkya Rahane KKR – 56 from 31 balls. A valiant effort in setting up KKR’s innings.
Sunil Narine – 44 off 26, added crucial runs but received little support from the middle order.
Turning Points of the Match
Hazlewood’s Spell – His very well-disciplined bowling in the middle overs sealed KKR’s momentum and made a ball-park score impossible to reach, even 190-all.
Kohli-Salt Partnership – Their 95 runs in 3 Kit allowed RCB an easy chase and broke KKR’s hopes early on.
Collapse in KKR’s middle-order: The onset did well in terms of getting runs but was going backward since KKR could not accelerate in their last five, eventually costing them dearly.
Captains’ Reactions:
Ajinkya Rahane (KKR Captain) – “We started well, but in the middle, we lost momentum. RCB played well, and now we need to regroup and do some hard work when it comes to the finishing stage. That’s just the first game, and we will bounce back from it.”

Rajat Patidar (RCB Captain): “The perfect start to our season. The team executed the plan well, and our bowlers set the game up for our batters. The way Kohli and Salt played was amazing.”
What Lies Ahead
This emphatically puts down the marker for RCB in the competition, besides KKR wanting to set things right with their middle-order problems and making a stronger comeback than before in their next matches.
This match shows why RCB is one of the most exciting teams to look for in this IPL season, with a blend of experience and explosive talent.
