With the curtains drawing on this extraordinary ten-year journey at Etihad, fans casting last-glance thoughts back about it would be one for the ages contest, not just for Manchester City but, dare I say, at home here in England.

For years, the playmaker has been at the heart of Pep Guardiola’s side: intelligent, true creativity, and consistency at the highest level define what makes De Bruyne such a special talent as he departs.

He thus becomes quite a name for hosting an era built on passing precision, sensational goals, and a trophy-laden campaign.

A Decade of Domination: Kevin De Bruyne’s Journey at Manchester City

Kevin De Bruyne joined Manchester City in August 2015, signing for a then-club record fee of £55 million from VfL Wolfsburg. The club immediately faced skepticism about whether it was worth spending so much money on a player who had not made much of an impression in a short spell with Chelsea. Well, very quickly, this doubt moved on.

In De Bruyne’s very first season, he displayed elite vision, passing range, and tactical intelligence.

He was soon an indispensable figure in the team set up by then-manager Manuel Pellegrini but soon after, under Pep Guardiola. The end result is a history-making rise for both De Bruyne and Manchester City.

In a total of 10 seasons with the Sky Blues, De Bruyne has won:

6 Premier League titles

2 FA Cups

5 EFL Cups

1 UEFA Champions League

2 Community Shields

De Bruyne has stated that the last greatness of the club was not merely his, but had been a going thing from the beginning and was to be found as a driving force behind domestic prowess and increasingly being a European powerhouse.

The Numbers Speak for Themselves

De Bruyne has numbers beyond compare: as of April 2025, he has made 413 appearances for Manchester City, has scored 106 goals and laid on 174 assists.

Most importantly, he holds the record for most assists in a single Premier League season (20)- sharing that record with Thierry Henry so long ago.

Currently holding 115 assists in the Premier League, he comes very close to Ryan Giggs and might very well surpass that by the time this season wraps up.

But more than just numbers define De Bruyne’s stature. It’s all about when such assists are delivered, how heavy such passes are, and when the contributions happen in the utmost critical moments.

Whether threading the needle in a tight Champions League knockout tie or blasting a thunderbolt from distance in a derby, De Bruyne seems to do it consistently.

Style, Substance, Consistency-

Indeed, Kevin De Bruyne embodies the modern midfielder in an ideal sense.

An attacking genius above and adequate within the tactical side of the game, he has evolved into various roles, from deep playmaker to a full-fledged attacking midfielder and even as a false nine when Pep aerodynamically tinkered and needed it.

His ability to dictate the tempo of the game, offer support to teammates in acres of space, and volley the ball from defense into attack, all in one fluid motion, serves as his weapon in tormenting opponents.

Few midfielders throughout history can boast that combination of cultural finesse and brutal efficiency.

His half-space whipped cross has earned a reputation as one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in Europe. In some ways, De Bruyne has redefined the term “creative” midfielder for the modern era.

Leadership and Legacy

As well as his technical brilliance, De Bruyne has emerged as a quiet commanding leader on the pitch. He became club captain soon after the departure of Fernandinho and has worn the armband with pride and humility.

You won’t see De Bruyne giving orders or acting theatrically. His leadership is understated, built on professionalism and accountability, and sets an example for others to follow. Is it any wonder that young City players often cite him as a role model and mentor?

His legacy in Manchester City, after 6 years at the club, is already guaranteed. Along with David Silva, Vincent Kompany, and Sergio Agüero, De Bruyne will be remembered as one of the greatest players to have ever donned the sky-blue shirt.

Many would claim he is the best midfielder in Premier League history.

A Bittersweet Goodbye. So, why now, Kevin De Bruyne Transfer news?

De Bruyne, while loyal to the club during his prime years, has dropped hints in some interviews that the next chapter of his career may lie away from Europe. In the summer of 2024, Al-Ittihad approached the Belgian with what seemed like exorbitant wages.

De Bruyne, however, who at that time was weighing up his options, decided to stay and see City through the 2024/25 season.

With the contract nearing expiry and the effects of elite football telling heavily on his body, it seems De Bruyne will soon be in for a new challenge, perhaps in Saudi Arabia, MLS, or even back in Belgium.

The announcement of his next challenge is pending; one thing is sure: the departure from Manchester will be an emotional one.

City’s Future Without De Bruyne

Manchester City are already looking to life beyond KDB. Reports suggest the club has earmarked Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz as a potential replacement, with a rumored £100 million price tag.

Wirtz is an immense talent by any standard, but replacing a player of De Bruyne’s caliber is quite a task. His shoes are virtually impossible to fill—not only in terms of stats, but in the intangible way he has shaped the City’s identity.

A Fond Farewell

As Manchester City supporters begin to come about this great news, tributes will surely come pouring in from all corners of the footballing world.

Expect a worthy farewell on his last home game at the Etihad—a night that will be awash with laughter, tears, and songs echoing his name.

For a player who gave his all to his club, who set standards few reach, and who played with grace and poise every hour of every game, Kevin De Bruyne will eternally be considered a City legend.
