A polythene bag was lying next to it. Probably a bakery product. Washed in the rainwater seemed quite clean. So how much fuel oil can be produced from this bag? ‘50-60 percent of the weight, because its quality is better than biscuit wrappers.’ Touhidul has been working with discarded polythene for a long time. Touhidul Islam, a young man from Jamalpur, made fuel oil using discarded polythene. It is not that the issue is not completely unknown, there are such examples in many countries. However, the phenomenon of making fuel from polythene waste is new in our country.

Not only oil, but Touhidul also got methane gas and ink for printing using the same polythene. Touhidul Islam, 25, has also received recognition for his work at home and abroad. Touhidul will receive the National Environment Medal 2018 this year in the Department of Environmental Research and Technology Innovation. The award will be presented by the Department of Environment on July 18.

Touhidul Islam has built a small plant next to the waste treatment plant of Jamalpur municipality. From there 105 liters of oil, 15 to 20 liters of LP gas, and a few liters of printing ink were produced experimentally. Touhidul Islam thinks that it is possible to produce 60 liters of fuel oil, 10 liters of methane gas, and 20 liters of printing ink from 100 kg of polythene.

Introduction to Polythene: Touhidul’s house in Beltia village of Jamalpur Sadar Upazila. His mother Halima Khatun planted a flower garden in one corner of the house. But the flowering plants were not growing. Why not grow up? Touhidul, a fourth-grader, set out to find the cause. He found out that the roots of the tree were coiled in polythene. As a result, it is not able to spread on the ground.

Touhidul Islam said, ‘I was very different in my childhood. It would be nice to think about something. If he got a toy in his hand, he would be more interested in showing the inside than in the game. That’s why the neighbors thought I was crazy and wouldn’t let their children mix. So I didn’t have any friends. ‘

Got the problem, but the solution? Touhidul Islam is looking for alternative ways to use this polythene waste. Can be destroyed by burning. But it also harms the environment. Touhidul was looking for an environmental way to destroy polythene.

2009 After a few years of study, he was a high school student. Focus on the pages of the chemistry book. Go to Ekramuzzaman, Lecturer, Department of Chemistry, Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Degree College, Jamalpur to know about various subjects. Ekramuzzaman said, ‘Touhidul would come to me whenever there was any problem. In the beginning, he started working in our science department. When he came to the practical class, he had questions about various subjects. He wanted to know what is produced from polythene through chemical reactions. Worked in the laboratory. Once upon a time, it was successful. ‘

He knows that polythene is a kind of high-tempered hydrocarbon. Then he tested it himself. Heat the polythene in a glass tube over high heat. Suddenly the test tube exploded. He did that a few more times. Success came once. He saw steam coming out of the tube under extreme pressure. Then it becomes cold liquid and is stored in a bottle like water. Later I saw something like that liquid oil.

Such was the story of the beginning. During this time he continued to study more about chemical reactions. In 2011 he could successfully produce the first oil. First, polythene has to be placed in a large steel chamber (an object that looks like a cylinder). That cell must be airtight. After heating the chamber, dark-colored liquids, methane gas, and ink were coming out through the tube. This fuel obtained by burning polythene can be used for various purposes. His own motorcycle runs on oil (petrol) produced at the plant.

Touhidul has received various awards for innovation since 2010. In 2016, Jamalpur district, Mymensingh divisional, and national level government took part in the ‘Digital Fair’ and received a prize of 6 lakh 20 thousand rupees as the best young inventor. In 2016, she won first place in the ‘Bangladesh in Search of Innovators competition organized under the Access to Information (A2I) project of the Prime Minister’s Office.

As a reward, he was personally allotted Rs 5 lakh and another Rs 20 lakh for the construction of the plant. Participated in the International Innovation, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) held in Malaysia in May and won a gold medal for innovative work on environmental protection. Tauhid is the youngest of three sons and one daughter of Abdul Mannan and Halima Khatun. Various recognitions and awards have inspired Touhidul Islam to work. He wants to take the work forward on a larger scale.
