Chennai Super Kings Scoop It Over Mumbai Indians in MI vs CSK Match Summary March 23 IPL 2025

The much-anticipated clash-a-shows between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) duly delivered all that was promised at the famous MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on March 23, 2025. The Gaikwad-led CSK relied on class and composure to give their archrivals a taste of defeat, chasing down a modest target of 156 runs with five balls to spare for the memorable win by four wickets.

MI Goes Down With a Whimper as Spinners of CSK Cruel MI

Winning the toss, MI skipper Hardik Pandya chose to bat first, hoping to take advantage of what is typical slow Chennai pitch. But instead of complete success, MI made life unlivable for the MI batters from the moment that CSK began their action with their spinners.

First Blow of MI

MI’s innings got off to a slow start as openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan were unable to handle CSK’s disciplined bowling assault. Deepak Chahar and Khaleel Ahmed’s pressure made it difficult for the veterans to score. Chahar achieved the first breakthrough in the third over, dismissing Kishan for just 7 runs LBW with an extraordinarily brilliant in-swing delivery.

Looked set to anchor the innings, Rohit Sharma, made his exit soon after scoring with 22 runs from 18 balls on a mis-timed shot against Noor Ahmad. The Afghan had a debut in IPL for CSK by turning the match upside down with his excellent spell.

Amazing Spell of Noor Ahmad

Of all the performances, Noor Ahmad was the one with the ball as he took 4 wickets for only 18 runs in his 4-over spell. Quite nothing did his moving and tight lines create havoc among the MI middle order, with MI top order defects like one form of Suryakumar Yadav (30 off 24) and Tim David (10 off 12) being more or less made hopeless about writing any high-maximum score.

MI was once at 78 and 5 after 12 overs, actually eying a pathetic total. There was some assurance from then onward with a fighting stand of 45 runs between Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya. Tilak was trying to play a maturity knock, scoring 42 runs in 31 deliveries.

Late-order Hustle of MI

In the end, contribution by Jofra Archer (14 off 7) and Hardik Pandya (29 off 23) lifted MI to 155/9 in the next 20 overs, marginally missing the track with scores not looking excellent on that day due to conditions and the strength of CSK’s batting force.

Chasing CSK: Rachin Ravindra Again

While it made a low target of 156 runs to achieve, CSK’s batting lineup walked in confidently. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway took the first two balls, setting the table for a solid entry. The MI attack, particularly that of their youngest pacer, Vignesh Puthur, had other intentions for CSK.

Gaikwad Opens the Floodgates

Conway was the first to fall when he managed just a flimsy 8 runs, but Ruturaj Gaikwad stood tall, performing an exemplary captain’s knock in the middle. He scored 53 runs off 40 balls, keeping CSK in the game despite the nonstop fall of wickets against him.

The remarkable contribution came from Shivam Dube with 27 off 18.

Vignesh Puthur’s Impact Spell

Just when it appeared that the game was slipping away from MI, impact player Vignesh Puthur turned the tide for a few moments. His wickets of Gaikwad, Dube, and Moeen Ali, in rapid succession, saw him end with match figures of 3/32 as CSK were down at 112/5 in 14 overs.

Rachin Ravindra’s Match-Winning Knock

While MI felt the game was stealing away, CSK used Rachin Ravindra’s brilliance to make the difference with an unbeaten 65 off 38 balls. Ravindra had the fearless attitude, mixed with skillful stroke play and the timely ability to rotate strike. He and MS Dhoni finished the match with ease, requiring 15 runs with 2 overs remaining, as Dhoni completed the victory with the winning boundary.

Key Takeaways from the Match

1. Noor Ahmad’s Dream Spell

The Afghan spinner’s 4/18 completely dismantled MI’s middle order and proved to be the game-changer.

2. Vignesh Puthur’s Breakthrough Performance

The young MI pacer impressed with a 3/32 spell, keeping MI in the game.

3. Rachin Ravindra’s Composed Knock

An unbeaten 65 off 38 under pressure showcased the Kiwi all-rounder’s temperament and class.

4. MI’s Batting Woes

Apart from Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya, MI’s batters failed to convert starts into big scores costing them the match.

Final Thoughts

The CSK victory over MI was a statement: The spinners have a great grip on the pitch, and their batting has deep pockets.

Noor Ahmad’s match-winning spell and Rachin Ravindra’s calmness under pressure were the defining moments during the match.

MI, on the other hand, will reassess their batting strategy and find ways to tackle such turning tracks in the coming matches.
