Sergio Ramos García is a Spanish professional footballer. Who plays for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain and the Spain national team. He most notably played as a center-back for Real Madrid for 16 seasons, whom he captained for six seasons. He has previously played as a right-back, earlier in his career.

Early Life:

Sergio Ramos was born on 30th March 1986 at Casmas in Spain. His father was Jose Maria Ramos and his mother was Paqui Ramos. He grew up watching bullfighting and is still a big fan of bullfighting. Ramos initially wanted to take up bullfighting as a career but his mother dissuaded him saying it was dangerous. Later his elder brother persuaded him for playing football and he agreed.

Club Career:

In the 2004–05 season, Ramos appeared in 31 games as Sevilla finished sixth and qualified for the UEFA Cup. In 2005, Ramos transferred to Real Madrid for €27 million. On 6 December 2005, he netted his first goal for the Merengues, in a 2–3 UEFA Champions League group stage loss at Olympiacos FC.

Ramos scored a vital goal in the Spanish Supercup contest against Valencia CF despite the fact Real Madrid playing with only nine men for a long period of time.

Euro Cup:

In Euro 2008, Ramos scored twice in 11 appearances. He played in all the matches except for a 3-1 win against Greece in the group stages. Spain headed to the finals where a pass by Sergio Ramos had nearly set up Marcos Senna’s first international goal, but Senna missed his opportunity by inches but Spain managed to seal a 1-0 victory.

In Euro 2012, the role of Ramos was changed from right back to center back with partner Gerard Pique. In the semi-finals against Portugal, the game ended in a goalless draw, and during the penalties, the Ramos-style penalty took take Spain to the finals. In the finals, Spain defeated Italy by a 4-0 win and Ramos claimed his third international trophy.

Ramos was selected to represent Spain in Euro 2016 as the captain of the team. In the group stages Spain finished as the group runners up after Ramos’s penalty was saved by Croatia keeper Subasic which ended in a 2-1 win for Croatia. In the round of 16, Spain had to face Italy who this time managed to defeat Spain.

International Career:

On 26th March 2006, Sergio Ramos Spain debut and holds the record of the second-youngest player behind Cesc Fabregas. He made his debut in a 3-0 win against China. On 12 October 2005, Ramos scored his first two international goals in a 6–0 win against San Marino for the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Ramos was immediately included in the 2006 FIFA World Cup squad after the retirement of Míchel Salgado and became the first choice right back. Spain qualified as the group champions but was defeated in the round of 16 by the eventual runners-up France. Spain received the fair play award from FIFA. Ramos was undoubtedly selected for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and was the first choice right back.

2014 World Cup:

Spain entered the 2014 World Cup as one of the favorites to win. This time Ramos was the first choice right back. Spain was unexpectedly eliminated in the group stages. Ramos had a different center-back partner in every match.

Ramos entered the 2018 FIFA World Cup as the Captain of Spain with one of the best teams. Spain topped the group of death with Portugal as runners-up. In the round of 16 against Russia, Ramos scored the opening goal for Spain. But it was later awarded as an own goal by Sergio Ignashevich. The game ended in a 1-1 draw and Spain lost 4-2 on penalties. Ramos scored the 4th Penalty but it was not enough.

Regardless of his age, Sergio is yet to become known as Europe’s best right-backs. Even though they have impressed many onlookers during their time at the club. They have, however, become known for producing attacking football. Something that is rare in the world of Spanish football. Their versatility has also endeared them to some of the world’s top players. Most famously Didier Drogba, who admitted has enjoyed a playing relationship with Sergio.

Personal Life:

Ramos is not married though he is engaged to his long-term girlfriend Pilar Rubio, a journalist and TV presenter. They began dating in 2012, a fact that both of them confirmed at the FIFA Ballon d’Or and proposed to her on 16 July 2018. They are parents to three children: all sons; the first is Sergio who was born on 6 May 2014, Marco who was born on 14 November 2015, and Alejandro who was born on 25 March 2018.
